Cities to visit in England

England is a country with a thriving tourist industry and an extremely rich and full history. There are numerous historical and architectural features all over the country, and each city and town has its own little piece to offer to those who want to learn about the country and its colourful past, or even more colourful present. The following are just some of the many interesting cities that visitors to the country might want to visit.

First off, the main attraction: London. London has been a major settlement for over two thousand years, and accordingly it has an intriguing mix of the old and the new. For those interested in the old, going to see Buckingham Palace is always a popular activity. This palace is the seat of the Queen of England, and during August and September it is open to visitors so you can go in and see how it is inside. The Houses of Parliament are interesting historical buildings too, and if you're interested in politics you can also go to see Number Ten Downing Street, the house of the Prime Minister. If your real desire is to go exploring, then a good first stop is the London Eye, which is a large ferris wheel that allows you to view London from a great height and pick the places that look interesting. As a treat, you can also visit Thorpe Park in Surrey, only a thirty-minute train journey from London, to enjoy a day at a very popular amusement park.

Of course, London is not the only exciting English city. You can also visit Liverpool, the home of the Beatles, and see the multitude of attractions there. The Tate Liverpool is an art gallery that was recently host to the prestigious Turner Prize, which displays a large number of pieces, both modern and classical. There are also a number of museums in Liverpool, including the International Slavery Museum, The Maritime Museum and the Museum of Liverpool.

Birmingham is another city with a diverse range of activities for visitors to engage in. It hosts a variety of festivals, has numerous museums and art galleries, and has world-class shopping centers and vibrant nightlife. It also has an interesting creative arts centre known as The Public, which has a variety of programmes and activities for families to enjoy.

Finally, by visiting the cathedral city of Salisbury, you can visit possibly the most famous English attraction there is; Stonehenge. It is possible to organize guided tours around the monument, where a guide will explain to you the history of the area and the reasons it was built, as well as they are known. You can also arrange an out-of-hours visit to the site where you are allowed to stand in the centre of the group of stones, something that is not allowed during the standard visits.
